Are you looking for something to drive or something of a project car?

If you're looking for something to drive, buy a '90. ABS, airbags, all the latest gadgets and gizmoes and undoubtedly the quietest ride. Additionally, you'll get the slightly-better transmission, which is worth something. No real congenital problems, though the ABS can be touchy if not maintained. I've had two (still have my '90 SPG) and the last c900s are definitely the best.

If you're looking for something to work on, buy an '86. They are very reliable, have no congenital problems, and in general are very solid cars. All the '86s I've ever been in contact with have been utterly trouble-free. Yeah, they don't have water-cooled turbos and they don't have the later-style brakes, but as your first projects you can retrofit them! They also don't have the crappy front headlights, bumper extensions that fall off, and no chance of having passive belts.

Don't rule out an 8v car, either. The '83 and '84 cars are quite solid, reliable, and cheap. I would not get into anything earlier, personally.

Years to avoid are '85 and '89.
