Have examples of both cars ('85 & '90), have long regarded SAAB lighting as marginal. It's bad when a non-car person points out how lousy the lighting is compared to her minivan, or retired buddy's old '80's Buick - gasp. The sealed beams on the pre-'87 are bordering on dangerous; just rotten.
It was a revelation when found out couple yr ago euro-spec lights are diff and 'supposedly' better. Bit the bullet and got E-codes, redid the wiring (nice), and bumped up to 100/90W => holy smokes, now I can see!!! It was a lot of money for me personally (maybe ~$550 and one day putzing all told), but the improved safety is all I need to justify it, even on a 17yo car. What a difference!
P.S. With such strong lights that must be visually aimed, take the time to aim them well. My apologies to blinding a few Milwaukee drivers while getting it tweaked....
