I have been searching this wondewrful site and learning more than I ever wanted to know about my 89 Saab 900. I am trying to recover from a recent string of events which has left me walking. First, the shifter on my manual transmission broke - after about a month of downtime I got replacement parts from the local 'pick-a-part' and got this fixed (was very proud of myself, too) Then the car started acting-up. It would just die. Then when cold starting it would do what sounds like 'idle-hunting'. Finally the starter gave up. I replaced the starter, but now I still cannot keep it running. It starts, runs for barely enough time to get warm (maybe 5 min) then the tach drops to zero. After it stops, the next time I attempt to start it there is no power to the fuel pump. If I hot-wire the fuel pump it runs, if I jumper the fuel pump relay it runs. I can tell when the relay is working and it will start - if I don't hear the relay switch after I start to crank - it won't start. Something is keeping the fuel pump relay from firing. I have been to several pick-a-parts and gathered up another air mass meter and ECU as well as a hand full of relays. No combination has changed the problem. If I reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery, it starts and then drops to zero.

I have checked continuity on most of the grounds with the neg. terminal of the battery and they are good. I have checked the vacuum on the manifold and it is steady at about 22". I have cleaned the AIC and checked to verify that the throttle sensor reads correctly for the throttle setting. I have checked the engine temp sensor and it has approximately the correct resistance. I have not been able to locate the test point to get the codes from the ECU based on descriptions here or at the Townsend site. I have cleaned the contacts in the distributor and ohmed the wire from the coil to the distributor. My distributor does not appear to have a hall sensor. I am at a loss for what to try next. I gather that this critter can put itself into a "limp home' mode. How can I get it into this mode? I think I have achieved this by disconnecting the AMM, AIC and throttle sensors and trying to start the car. I also wanted to know if unplugging the fuse for the ECU resets it like disconnecting the neg. lead on the battery?
