Here are what the 3 electronic units in a 16-valve, US-spec C900 do. Don't worry, it took most of us some time to wrap around the subtleties of all of the electronic boxes in a C900.

The EZK is the box that has all of the logic for controlling ignition advance - it's behind the left headlight. It has different functions than what we call the ECU, which is the fuel injection computer.

The Ignition Module is the switching device. It's on the coil in the '89 N/A cars and on the outside of the inner fender on the others. It takes the pulse signal from the EZK box on N/A 16-valve cars (from the hall effect sensor in the distributor on 16-valve Turbos) and uses that signal to trigger the coil.

The ECU controls the fuel injection. It's located on the right kickpanel under the dash. It gets a pulse signal from the Ignition Module on most cars so it knows the engine RPM and it takes the signals from the AMM to know how much air the engine is ingesting and does it's work from that.

My suspicion is that SAAB tried a lot of minor cost-cutting things to take steps out of in component installation and decrease material costs the '89 model year. Some of them (which we don't hear about) were successful, but a bunch of them (ECUs and the ignition module) weren't.

That's a good question as to whether EZK boxes from other years are pin-compatible with the '89 box. If the functional destinations of all the wires in the plug are the same, you should be able to swap between years. But I don't have a Bentley handy to compare the wiring diagrams for the various years, so I couldn't commit to it.
