fill it up and keep a check on it.. loseing fluid thru a bad cap isnt as common as some folks think it is.. dont matter what colour it is.. if your car is running cool and u aint filled the tank right to the brim there shouldnt be that much pressure in there anyway..
there is one thing to mention thow.. if u do have a little cooling system leak around the top of the expansion tank area dont expect to find pressure there in the morning even if your head gasket is iffy.. for that test to work the rest of the system has to be reasonably leak free.. if not any residual pressure will leak out.. if the leak is where water is.. water will come out.. if the leak is where air is.. ie.. the top of your expansion tank air will come out.. one way to look at things is to let your car run when stood let it get hotter than normal and see if there is any signs of steam coming out the cap.. when your gauge gets up to say 2/3s or higher there will be pressure beginning to build up in the system cos the water is near or over atmospheric boiling point.. basically the hotter things get the more an iffy pressure cap will leak.. if in doubt let things get hot and look..
of course the common advice is replace the bloody thing anyway.. one of the main reasons this bad cap myth persist is "replacing things just in case cos they are cheap".. one never does get to find out the truth useing such methods... he he.. it does keep the auto parts industry in business thow..
there does seem a common pattern at work.. if its "cheap" replace it known to be faulty or not.. if its dear replace every other "remote" but cheap possibility first.. which of course just makes the dear repair even dearer.. he he he
one other thing.. no damage will be caused by running your car two or three pints short of a gallon.. i would guess at least four or five pints need to be lost for it to impede the coolant circulation.. that four or five pints is a safety margin so to speak.. the same applies to oil levels there is always a hefty safety margin below what the manual states.. i aint advocating slipshod maintainance just pointing out that cars are designed to be driven by idiots... he he
