Even an hour might be worth it if you can find a friend to give you a ride home. Chances are won't be leaving your car, but just picking up parts and getting some coaching. Just in case, he has a full shop run by Andy, an excellent technician. I live almost an hour away, too and it's worth the drive. I only leave my car for transmission work, which I don't do myself, but I'm picking up parts/info frequently.
It sounds like you should get a Bentley manual, if you don't have one yet.
keep a close eye on your coolant and temp gauge. I would also take a look at your water pump. Get a bicycle mirror and a good flashlight to look below the pump to see if it's leaking there.
BTW Pressure from the cylinder head that gets to the cooling system will not show up until after you have started the car. Lack of pressure before you start the car is normal. If the pressure rapidly builds up in 3 minutes (before the coolant has warmed up and expanded), then the headgasket is leaky. If you so need a new headgasket, I would definitely recommend that you take it to sobstory as the hour drive becomes trivial.
