did a similar trip to california from pittsburgh (via grand canyon) when I was in college. It certainly was fun. We changed the oil before we left, when we got to california, and when we reuturned. We also had to buy a new set of tires when we arrived in california - mediocre intialial alignment and speeds in excess of 105mph will exacerbate any wear pattern rather quickly.
It'd be a good idea to change all the coolant hoses, thermostat, flush coolant, flush brake fluid, check brake wear, check tire wear, check (replace) hydraulic fluid hoses to clutch, have the car aligned, check (replace) all suspension components and in general replace everything you think might fail and leave you stranded. A full-size spare (from the junkyard) might prove useful as well. AAA memberships are really cheap when compared to the cost of a towtruck (membership =~$60, towtruck = $60 hookup +$3/mile). I don't know if they'll help you in Canada though.
Also be sure that you know how to change the film in your camera before you leave - some confusion on my part destroyed a beautiful roll of Grand Canyon photos.
Research before you leave is the important part.
