I have taken many a trip of simular distances from Ottawa to vancouver.
Cold has an ill effect on any car. A full size spare is highly suggested.
If this is a budget trip stick with the basics, there are allot of chain shops along the way that can help (midas muffler's are allllll over the place in canada) Get your car sprayed with undercoating, the thick oily kind not the tar stuff. This really helps reduce stress on worn suspension parts/bushings, helps protect from road salt and other hazards (it costs $50 canadian here... so i'm sure its like 20 bucks there). Bring loads of -40 wiper fluid/extra wiper blades, nothing worse then not seing well on a long road trip. Ensure that your doors, hood and such are well lubricated. if this is a turbo car, when you stop make sure you allow the car to idle for 5 minutes before you kill it. Let that turbo cool down!!! Bring jumper cables, alternator belt. Extra oil!!! Always have 2 or 3 extra quarts of oil. Snow brush with good ice scraper. Cup holders are an asset.
