Although I haven't done any work on models newer than the 9000. Without proper resources, I'm sure that they can be frustrating at the very least.
On Friday I fixed the seat heater and replaced the antenna mast on a friend's 9000. I've done these things on a 900 before, but the 9000 seemed to want to thwart my every move.
First, the bolts holding the seat to the floor require this huge torx bit that I didn't have in my tool kit and wasn't stocked by any hardware store in a 50 mile radius. Next, when I finally unbolted the seat, the seat belt was mounted to it, so I had to dismantle the upholstery and fix the wiring with the seat hanging halfway out the front door of the car. The electric motors in the seat made re-upholstering it a PIA.
Then came the power antenna. In my SPG, I can remove the antenna in a matter of a minute or two. One (or two- it's been a while) easy torx screws, and the whole motor and mounting plate pop right out. The 9000 has a much larger mounting plate held on with three 10mm bolts, and two of them are on the bottom edge of the trunk, conveniently obstructed by an aftermarket CD changer. In order to spare you the profanities I was spouting, I'll just say that the antenna repair took longer than an hour.
At least there is a happy ending- everything now works the way it should, and I got some free skiing in at Whiteface yesterday, followed by free beer and fajitas for dinner.
