Thank you so much, Andy. I appreciate your kindness in sending such a thorough and informative response. I'll try to answer your questions to the best of my ability. You'll have to pardon my lack of accurate terminology along the way, I'm afraid...
This is a non-turbo automatic '93 900.
The change in sound seems more like a mechanical noise, rather than an exhaust noise.
You ask if the performance is the same since the replacement of the motor mounts. Yes. What seems to happen is that when I accelerate, there seems to be rather a pause...a hesitation...almost what I'd call a "skip", I think. Also, when I tried to start the car this morning, it stalled one time, which is unusual. And finally, the RPM needle seems to be lower than it was, hovering around 1 or below (and the needle sort of fluctuates) when I first start the car and when it is idling. This is also unusual.
The noise we hear is consistent with the RPM needle moving...not a single line of noise but an up and down sort of noise..."rooom, rooom, roooom, roooom", in a consistent fashion with the needle going up and down.
Also, the fan which tends to run after the car is shut off...lately, since the work has been done, it seems to run more. Even if I just drive a couple of miles, when I shut the car off, that fan starts running, which is unusual.
Yesterday when I went back and had the mechanic check the car, he had the hood up, and he wasn't touching anything, just looking under the hood, and I watched the RPM needle (and we could hear it) going up and down, up and down...fluctuating with the sound.
From your most informative post, I realized that the fluids I saw leaking were not pink fluid and oil, but green fluid and oil, so it wasn't transmission fluid, but coolant. It was leaking coolant and oil. I called them and they said it was nothing to be concerned about because those fluids will pool when they do the motor mount job...that this is what happens when the do the motor mount job. The leaks appear to be in the middle, as opposed to left or right.
We are located in central Maine, and have had a very difficult time finding a good mechanic to work on this car since purchasing it.
Thank you very much for your time and effort in trying to help us to sort this out. We have put a lot of money into this car, in an attempt to maintain it and keep it well tuned, but it seems that we are having very bad luck, especially with mechanics who seem not to know how to address the various issues which arise
I appreciate your help very much.
Julia
