exhaust manifold studs (and a few other things)

I tried to reconnect the exhaust down pipe today. The one exhaust stud that had pulled out looked a lot like an M10 size bolt w/ 1.50 pitch (I brought the old bolt to the hardware store with me). Unfortunately though the new studs don't seem to fit the exhaust manifold sockets very well. Did I guess the bolt type for exhaust manifold studs properly? I'd love to hear what the Saab specification is! I suppose I could reuse the old studs - I'm a little reluctant though.
Tried to loosen the engine block coolant drain plug but couldn't apply sufficient torque from the garage floor. Maybe I'll have better luck when the exhaust is bolted back up.
Is there a trick to getting the shift coupler aligned? The Bentley manual suggests that a special Saab tool is necessary(and sits in the differential housing) - I don't yet see why though.
Also wondering where I can find the bigger vacuum hoses that the AIC thing needs. The two autoparts stores I went didn't have anything appropriate. I ended up buying a heater hose of the correct size. This seems like jury-rigging to me.
The tie rod ends seem very difficult to get back on. Those nylon nuts really don't want to go back on.
