I had a similar problem on my 84 900T. Scandinavian Import Service noticed it somewhere along the line during a routine service and did an in-the-car repair for $20. Involved drilling out the egg-shaped hole and tapping in a hardened bushing...I think the bushing came from a rear shock that was shortened. Anyway, the bushing solved the problem for well over a hundred K.
It doesn't hurt to grease the stock bushing either....JUST the one from the pedal to the MC. It seems the pivot bushing up top doesn't wear.
