the problem with the screw type compressors i have used is the fact the threaded rod hits the inside wheel well. to avoid that i use homemade pipe spacers over the rod on the rod drive nut end. the drive nut clamps against the pipe and the threaded rod starts it's compression point with the threads just engaged on the threaded block. vs. well thru it.
you could also try bridging the sheet metal area with a 3/4 inch piece of oak to spread the force.
