I think though they are dangerous anytime you decide to mess with them, even with a spring compressor. A few months ago, when I was cutting a short segment of my springs off to lower the car (yeah, I'm cheap), I had to somehow remove the wire I had wrapped around it so I could cut the spring with the grinder. What I did was put a 5 foot long heavy lead pipe though the middle of the spring. I laid the thing down on the ground, and took the grinder and cut away the wires holding it compressed. I knew it was going to be a pretty violent reaction when the wire snapped off. Well, it certainly was. The speed and force with which the spring snapped free was amazing. It was in the blink of an eye. It threw gravel from the driveway in both directions. It would clearly kill a person if it hit them in the face, or even the chest. Too bad dealing with these things is a necessary evil when working on the car.
