Compressing spring without a spring compressor

I own a coil spring compressor, however, it is too bulky to fit onto the coil spring while it is installed in the car. I believe most spring compressors won't work on the C900, you really need to buy the Saab one or a very similar one.
What I've been doing, and I've done this many times, is to use a jack on the bottom ball joint and jack the wheel up as far as possible. Then (with the wheel removed obviously) tie some spare 14 gauge stranded copper wire around it about 15-20 times on opposite sides of the spring. After you have wrapped up and down the spring, you need to further tighten it by wrapping sideways a couple times over each space in the coils (as you can see in the photo). After its tied up, just slowly let the jack down and it will more or less fall right out.
It is imperative that you tie the wire around the furthermost coils of the spring (the very bottom one and the next-to-top one) so that it stays compressed enough to come out.
