Hey Folks, I just brought my 900 in to the local SAAB dealer for repairs. I had originally brought it in last March because it was leaking about a pint of brake fluid a week. They repaired it, but it looks like it came back because it has a slow leak again and there is brake fluid in the same place (by the firewall). I also asked for an estimate on doing the a-arm bushings, as the front end is squawking quite loudly over bumps. This is what they came back with:

"Replace coolant expansion valve: $186.00. Replace flexible front brake line hose: $430.00. Replace four ball joints: $675.00. Replace sway bar brackets: $230.00. Replace NG steering shaft $732.00." Customer req. est. for front arm bushings: $691.20 for the lowers and $1255.60 for the uppers.

I'm just wondering if anybody here finds this excessive? I asked them to look at the brakes (that were leaking only slightly), and to give me a quote on bushings. I was somewhat shocked with the $4199.80 estimate. The front brake lines alone... $430.00??? what is it? $40 for SAAB OEM brake lines? Can it take more than a few hours to do this?

Some side notes: A) They said whatever problems I have with my brakes is unrelated to the repair they did last year. B) There is no "coolant expansion valve" on this car, right? If they meant coolant diverter valve, I replaced that just last year. C) My regular mechanic replaced the sway bar bushings and related hardware (brackets???) and two front ball joints (four???) a few months ago. I did the shocks also. D) My steering is a bit stiff, and that mechanic had replaced the pump and the rack a few months ago as well. The steering was good for a few days then went back to the way it had been before. I am thinking they lubed the universal joint with WD-40 (which I suggested from info here) and the WD-40 just dissipated. All in all it's really just slightly sticky, not worth so much trouble (ie; money). "NG steering shaft?" So how often do steering u-joints (shafts?) fail in the absence of a front-end collision? E) This is the only SAAB dealer in the greater Hartford area!
