hiya,
thank you - yes - the front are held in with torx, a set of drivers which i happen to have. but i stopped short when i saw that if i removed that panel, the hose for the defrost would almost surely disconnect. it didn't seem to have any slack at all and would likely pop off and slither down into the dash if i went any further. and not having a panel tool for the rears, per the other helpful respondent - at this point i may take up the local shop's offer to install the set for $50. as long as they can guarantee i won't notice a single thing - i want to keep the stock looks.

for the alarm, no i cannot say i know for sure that it used to work, but the guy was really forthright and honest - told me about issues that i did not ask about and probably would not have noticed. so i believe his assertation that the alarm worked until a new battery was installed, then it went into some sort of mode. but maybe he just assumed - the battery install may have knocked something around. gonna check it out this weekend.
