I love to drive but HATE to commute. Most 9-to-5ers SUCK behind the wheel (excluding Saabnet members of course ;D). Everybody playing out their little passive-aggressive power fantasies that they suppress in the office or treating their car like the livingroom couch and sparing scant attention for the road... And that's all above and beyond the abject failure of metropolitan road systems to handle current and growing traffic volume. When I lived in Boston I was forced to conclude that I was just generally a Better Person there overall, not to mention more punctual, when I got around on a bicycle. But carless isn't an option out here in the sticks...
A couple years ago I had occasion to drive across most of South Africa, and despite all of the clashing extremes (struggling loaded minibus taxis, screaming Benzes/BMWs, suicidal triple-trailer trucks and the odd herd of livestock), dubious conditions on their roads, and that whole driving on the wrong side thing, everybody just Got Along, doing their own thing at their own speed without obstructing or delaying anyone else. It was amazing to watch so many social antagonists so easily accomodate each other behind the wheel and made me realize, for a "Car Culture", just how incompetent and egocentric most American drivers really are.
