I have an 85 and began my exploration into wiring issues in the exact same place as you are doing. I got my power locks working again and I'm sure you can do the same. I would not try to duplicate the same gauge of wiring because I don't think it matters too much in that location, especially given the present condition of the wiring! If you're cautious, err on the side of too much wire. You can't do any harm putting an extra gauge in there.
Enjoy your 85. I enjoy mine. Don't let the wiring scare you off. We have the best year of the 900!
