Fuel pump woes?? '90 900 Turbo

Hiya!
I'm trying to help a "non-car-guy" friend out w/ his '90 Saab 900 16V Turbo.
The car appears to be in fine shape, but he's sure there's something wrong with the fuel system. The filter looks original (as in, factory..) so we'll be replacing that.
The car will occasionally start, and run for between 30 seconds and five minutes, and then it will quit entirely. We don't have even a Haynes manual (yet..) for the car, but the owner's manual claims the fuel pump relay is under the right side of the dash. The dashboard in these cars is amazingly well put-togther (i'm a Porsche guy myself...), and i don't wanna tear it apart if i don't have to.
Anyhow, pumps are expensive, and he's on a tight budget. This thread:
http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/900/index.html?bID=286974
mentions jumpering a couple of fuses to test/see if the pump hums. I tried this already with the key in the "on" position, but i hear the ABS pump only.... Can someone confirm for me what i should do to test the pump?
And, if possible.. tell me explicity how to find the darn fuel pump relay? I'd hate to replace the pump if the relay is bad....
And finally... recommendations on the best place to get another pump, if/when it comes to that?
So... thanks in advance, this board looks like a great resource, it's clear that there are some real Saab "nuts" around here...
;-)
