I ran across that problem when I was trying to get the same bit of wiring out of my parts car. It turns out that the connector is too big to go through the opening that the rubber accordian goes through. Andrew posted that the connector comes apart so you can just pull the wires through.
Good luck with the door.
I also had a rattling mirror on my '89. On mine, the plastic for housing had a small break by the hinge, so it wouldn't seat correctly. I swapped in one from my parts car. In order to get to the screws, you need to take off the plastic triangle cover on the inside. Push in the center of the plastic rivet (you'll know when you see it), and you should be able to pull the rivet out, take the triangle cover off, and access the torx screws.
