I thank you for the three messages posted so far, but I don't think any of them addresses the problem I'm having, so I must not have described it well enough.
I've already disassembled the connectors so I can pull the wires through the rubber accordian pieces. That's not the problem. The problem is that something is holding onto the accordian piece, pinning it to the door. Is it a clip, a tie-wrap? I can't see!
As for the mirror, it's not the glass, it's the body. It's as Jonathan Scupin described: the part attached to the door is stable, but the entire housing that the glass is in wobbles. The glass itself is not loose. BTW, the car isn't 10 to 15 years old... it's 20! Doesn't look a day over 10! Except for the wiring...
Thanks to all for your help so far. I encourage more suggestions about how to get the stupid rubber accordian thing free from the car though!
