The whole pickup truck and now SUV thing started with the original pollution controls on passenger cars and a macho image thing that got blended with the mistaken idea that having no pollution controls meant a better vehicle. It started to be the "thing" to have a truck instead of one of those wussy cars with all that garbage on them. Detroit picked up on this quickly and started tricking trucks out with all sorts of car appendages, soundproofing, fancy upholstery, SOUND SYSTEMS, etc., making what had been a working tool become the basic mode many people used to simply get their average 150 lb.-220 lb. bodies from place to place, a ton or so of steel racing all over the place instead of half as much, more elegantly and more comfortably, in a passenger car.
As trucks were then a small part of the total transit picture Congress went along with exempting them from lots of basic rules for passenger vehicles, pollution, gas mileage, safety, crashworthiness, and for some reason people lapped that right up.
Then, out of the tricked-up truck sprang the SUV and somehow, they became trendy and ID'd with macho "Can't tell me what to do" types. The world is much the worse for the phenomenon.
Talk about waste of gas, oil, etc., and worst of all they're more dangerous than good cars, not safer, and there are a lot of good people as well as fools who are no longer with us because they felt invincible and could easily make them go fast but couldn't stop them from skidding or tipping off the road at speed and rolling.
I call them Road Hippos. The sooner the entire breed dies out, like the dinosaurs, the better for everyone.
