The SAAB's my daily driver and is sure fun! I can't complain about a car that will get 30 MPG's or more on the open road, hangs onto a turn like it's on rails, and will pull away from a signal before most of those SUV's have even got the converter clutches engaged in their slush-o-matic transmissions.
but when I have the desire to head to the water with the boat, or head out for a campout, the van is the vehicle of choice. Unfortunatly, I can't sleep in the back of my 900 convertible, or tow my sailboat with it....so I use the van
It's not a big van...a Chevy Astro van, with a V6 engine twice as big as the SAAB's engine...but still smaller than most SUV engines. The van is short and remarkably small on the outside, but has more cubic feet inside than a Chevy Subdivision. The van handles suprisingly well with it's wide, low-profile tires and firm springs. Not as good as the SAAB, but still able to leave most SUV's skidding or rolling over in a good freeway on-ramp or back road. The van has stickshift too...a very rare option for a van indeed, but it helps it get about 24 MPG's out on the open road...not too bad I'd say. I guess some of this can be attributed to the van's more streamlined body...there's not "cow catcher" on the front, or upright windshields, spotlights, or other stuff to catch wind. In fact, it's got a small air dam across the front to keep windage off the undercarrage, just like a SAAB has!
It's pretty funny, and sad though, the people that would buy an SUV won't even touch a van, even though a van would give them the same, if not more capabilites as an SUV, without all the problems, like poor mileage, and poor handling. Something about an image problem...Still, it's pretty sad what a SAAB will do that an SUV won't!
