I agree 100% that we should tax overweight vehicles, provided we also tax overweight people. The effects of obesity on our national health, and the costs associated with diseases linked to an overweight lifestyle are killing Medicare. Everyone should weigh in at least once each year, and pay a 'large operators fee' tax for every pound over their body-mass maximum based on height and frame. :)
My truck weighs over 6,000 pounds. I don't need a special operators permit to safely drive the vehicle. I'm very safe in it. I'm fairly certain that I'd be on the winning side of the inertia and momentum equation in most accidents. If y'all want to tax this choice that I make, please do. But be prepared for those taxed (like me) to bring out the guns to tax choices other people make. No one that I've ever met is benign. No one can say that nothing in their lifestyle doesn't offend someone, be-it a tree hugger, or an anti-gun warrior, or a militant anti-tax-hate-the-federal-government fringe group, or an I-hate-motorcycles zealot.
I don't think anyone is particularly impartial. Certainly not the posting above this one...not impartial at all. Very partial. Very, very partial. Everyone has their hot button. An SUV sparked the hot button that started this topic. I have mine, he has his, she has hers, you've got yours. I will defend my right to own a 2500HD (and it is a right that I have, to do what I want within the boundaries of the law). I will also defend my right to use it for its intended purpose without being unfairly taxed. Personal freedom is the foundation of the country. And thank God, no matter how frustrated people get trying to legislate common sense, it still can't be done. People in this country are free to be stupid if they want to be.
Good night all. Best to you.
