If you have the axles off now, IMVHO, you are better off replacing the axle assembly. Here's why:
- You don't have to worry if the tripod bearings need to be replaced.
- If the boots have a hole(s) in them, there's a good chance dirt got in and started wearing the joint.
- The axles are available for $90 from eEurparts (not sure of the warranty) or $60-$80 from PartsAmerica.com (lifetime warranty).
I'm all for saving a $ or two, but in this case it may make sense to splurge.
One suggestion - the exhaust pipe bakes the passenger side inner joint. Wrap the exhaust pipe with some type of heat shield (I used header wrap) to keep the heat away from the joint. See the link for the front end rebuild on my 900 (replaced axles, ball joints, brake discs, lower control arms, and LCA bushings).
