hood release cable (and octane)

Hello,
How can I open the hood of my '85 900 without using the hood release lever? I tried to pop the hood the other day, and the lever pulled free from the cable. I grabbed the cable with a pair of vise grip pliers, pulled it, and still the hood would not release. (This also happened on my old '84 900 -- stretched cable?). I saw something in the bb archives about removing the grille, but didn't get the details (didn't see exactly what to do after removing grille).
Also, like the NA models I had, the '85 owner's manual says use minimum 87 octane fuel, I believe even for the turbo. I have been using the 89 octane in the turbo. Should I be splurging and putting the 91 octane fuel in the tank?
Any help much appreciated as always!
Thanks,
-jw
