Thanks for the responses. I gave the cable another pull with the vice grips and didn't think anything happened. Went to the front of the car, and hood still looked fully shut, but when I pulled up on the front rim, it opened. After checking fluids, it took a little work to get it back on the tracks to close (the hinge/bracket in the front is rusted), working solo, but got it back on pretty quickly.
Thanks also to RayF for all the info. The hood needs work, and thankfully is one of the few things the car needs. I plan to replace it entirely, and at the same time lube the "catch" for the cable, etc. It was said elsewhere here that it's a DIY job, especially with someone to help line the hood up when I bolt on a new one.
