The regular non subwoofer speakers will sound better with a quality amplifier that has enough power to drive them. To prove it to yourself, simply listen to the speakers (even home speakers) driven by different amplifiers - you can usually hear a difference in the high end extension, clarity of the highs, how well the bass is controlled and deep versus boomy, flabby and innacurate. My sense is that you will never get huge bass from car size speakers - but you may get relatively accurate bass down to a certain level without a subwoofer - which may be more than enough for your likes. It is always simple to add an amp and a sub after you do the other stuff. I would suggest starting without a sub with a good quality amplifier for the main system and see how you like it - you can always add on. As for brands - well I'm kind of at a loss - its been a while - rockford fosgate (not sure if they still are around) alpine blaupunkt infinity seem to all have been in the business for a while. A quick and dirty on amp power is how the watts per channel rating changes when the ohm rating changes. With a "better" for lack of a better term amp, the watt rating should double every time the speaker resistance (ohm) is cut in half. But I am oversimplifying. The best thing to do is listen listen listen and compare compare compare. Let your ears be the judge. Happy listening!!!
