I've got an 87 vert, and I upgraded my sound a few years ago. First off, go with the 4" up front, you can get 6 - 6 1/2 rounds to fit in the back. From what you mentioned, there's no bass of any kind in that setup?
I went with a powered sub & amp unit... the infinity basslink. Lots of bass, with an amplifier, in an enclosed unit that takes up about a cubic foot of space... perfect for the back of the convertible.
And if you need an iPod adapter (which i do, so I'm upgrading my head unit) don't go with Alpine. The Blaupunkt (good german brand) head units link to an iPod with a $17 cable... where most other brands charge $75 - 150ish. Think about it... for the money you save there you can buy a lot better head, speakers, or have the cash for the sub I mentioned (list was $500 a few years ago... should be able to find it on eBay for 150ish).
a good head unit has more than enough power to get the speakers moving... a $400 amp with no subwoofer is overkill.
6x9 didn't fit in the back for me... but all in all, my goal was to be able to hear balanced sound with the top down at highway speed (yes that includes bass) and I accomplished it for less than $500.
If you have more questions just ask.
