Landjet, could the noise be the chains or upper chainwheel bearing? Also on some higher mileage c900 five speeds I've seen the snout on which the upper chainwheel mounts get ground down on it's top surface from a lightly seized upper chainwheel bearing. Since these aren't my trannys that I'm fixing I can't say for sure but I'll bet that it made some noise. Of course those things are only moving when the clutch is engaged and the tranny is in neutral or the car is coasting in gear (with the clutch in or out). With the front tranny cover off you'll be able to examine all of that stuff.
