The transmission is a virgin. It was operated by a lady that used it in a very precise and responsible way. I had it drained, cleaned the screen, and reviewed the pocket where the magnet is and everything was normal. No pieces or funky looking lubricant. The input shaft seal had been leaking for a long time, so I imagine that oil was added during the servicing -- or I would hope so. I suppose it was possible that the oil got low, and then the pickup for the chains could have been dry -- I would guess that the primary drive would be the first to suffer when fluid levels were being depleted on a regular basis.
I picked up an engine and transmission manual for a 90SPG today to review -- Saab factory manual. I see now the setup for the tensioner(s).
I am thinking now that there may be two things that are making noise -- the bellows, and pilot bearing/input shaft. I bet the bellows is riding against the pressure plate and making the hideous sound. In the manuals, a very compact plastic sleeve is over the throwout bearing -- I was told that this sleeve is no longer available instead of the bellows. Gary at Swedish Dynamics told me I would have to try to find one in a salvage yard, and did not do so prior to building the assembly. Comments on that? Can I find the sleeve to replace the bellows in some obvious place I have not looked? Could I have assembled the bellows in the wrong direction?
I should have a better handle on this problem this weekend -- hope to open the patient on Friday for a look.
