Landjet, there is a hydraulic chain tensioner between the two vertical aspects of the chain(s). It has two horizontally opposed "shoes" with a spring between them. When the transmission is turning the assembly fills with oil and the shoes spread the chains left and right with a hydraulic dampening effect. In a well maintained transmission these are pretty trouble free (from what I've seen, but there's always a first). If this assembly were not working right you would have a lot of chain slack and no doubt noise. It is possible to install this assembly upside-down and that would prevent it from filling with oil. Has this transmission been worked on or rebuilt?
