Thanks RayF for the comments on the duty cycle of the bearing. These posts do make you think about what is really happening.
The "grinding" or buffeting noise under the bell housing is diminished when the clutch is depressed. Doesn't go away completely, but it is reduced. Before I dig it all out, I plan to get the bell housing out and then hopefully find the tommyknocker before I have to pull it all apart.
My problem is that I was in the bearing business for 20 years (aircraft though) and now know just enough to be dangerous but not lethal.
