Carl, Regardless of where the timing is there should be a spark evident. If it's timed wrong it won't run but there would still be sparks occuring. So if you have no spark then that is the place to begin. The "Hall Effect" connector on the distributor (the 3 wire connector on the side) is a very common source of a "no spark" condition. They are pretty fragile and easily non-conductive in spite of being in place. Be sure that the plug wires are in the correct order and remember when you do the timing that #1 cylinder is the one nearest the firewall. Ignition timing on your car is 16 degrees BTDC. It may be very hard to start if you aren't at least pretty close to that. Plug gap is 0.024"-0.028". The most common problem that people have when they lift a 16 valve head off is getting the cams timed right upon reassembly so take a good hard look at that too. Good luck.
