Carl, I don't have a Bentley, only the Saab books and they say the 3 wires inside the shielded cable from the distributor to the ignition amplifier should be brown, green and black, no red. The most likely thing here is that the cable is crusty and an internal short or open occured when it was manipulated during the head gasket job. All three of the wires in that cable go only to the ignition amplifier module so I would test for continuity and no cross continuity at both ends. At the Ig. Amp. Module connector the pins for those wires are; #3, #5 and #6 of the 7 pins. Look at the module for the numbering sequence but I recall that looking at the module (pins down) #1 is on the right and #7 is on the left so correlate that with the connector. Wiggle the cable while you check the continuity. Obviously you're getting closer to the solution. Good going.
