I replaced my mast a few months back. (Long) Posted by Wil W [Email] (#1148) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Wil W) on Thu, 20 Jul 2006 07:18:00 In Reply to: New Antenna = Dead Radio, Phat Slaab, Wed, 19 Jul 2006 22:14:53 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'm a limited DIY'er and I just did this about a month back on my 89 SPG. I was told the same thing about broken gears. My old mast had some kinks in it that stopped it from extending/retracting properly. But I wasn't sure about the broken gears. I bought a replacement mast from eEuroparts also and tried my luck. Mine is a hatch so I had a little more room, but I'm guessing a convert is the same except for the space. Here was my experience.
1. Removing old mast was more difficult than expected. I had to pull extremely hard on it to get it out. I actually tried on multiple occasions and consulted the board a few times. I finally yanked on it REALLY HARD and it finally came lose. I inspected the cable and gears and lenght seemed fine, so no broken gears. I didn't have to open and clean the motor
2. After removing the mast, the sleeve stayed in. Removing the sleeve was bad also. I was unable to pull sleeve out at all and had to use a drill as someone suggested. This made it easier, but it was somehow rusted into place. It took a lot of effort to drill out most of the old sleeve.
3. The new sleeve didn't fit because I couldn't get all of the old out. It took some effort to get the new sleeve in. I had already removed the barrel from the motor and had it on my bench vise to remove the old sleeve. I had to hammer the new sleeve in to install it. I actually had to cut of about 1/2" of the new sleeve because it would go in any further.
4. When I finally had it all back together, the motor wouldn't run. I had to make sure I had the actual mast grounded. It did not work when I just tried to jumper everything because the mast sleeve was not grounded. Once I reconnected the ground it retracted fine. After a few cycles it retracted completely.
After 2 months, it seems to be running fine. I had a couple of occasions where it did not retract fully and I gave it a little push the next time it retracted and it has been fine since.
Just my experience. Hope this helps.
