sounds like you are correct! I believe there is a fuse on the fender in the engine compartment (where all of the fuses are). did you already check that one? I'd remove the new antenna. check fuses, and see if you can get power to the radio (you could play a cassette to see if the audio still works?).
does the replacement antenna look just like the one you are removing? wire colors, connectors and the like? also, if you get the radio to be happy again you could just plug the coax lead in to the antenna and see if AM works ok. AM is not as picky as FM on the antenna lenght (multiples of something - forget what).
then if that all works, BEFORE you power up the radio again mount the antenna so that it's grounded before you turn the radio on.
but make sure the unit really really looks like the other one.
