if your mast came out and some of the plastic was left behind you need to take the antenna out and remove the broken leader from the antenna motor unit. about 30 minutes if you've never done it before...
getting the bentley from eEuroparts.com would be a good thing too but procedure below. eEuroparts ships surface for free at $39 or more order, book is a little less! get a mast or plugs or some other spare item with the bentley and shipping on all is free.
but here is how to do the mast:
on the antenna, remove (cresent wrench works well) the nut holding the rubber rectangular gromment on the fender well. you then need to remove the antenna from the fenderwell (at least part way), there may be plastic "screws" in the liner fabric, 90 degree turn to remove them, to allow you to move the fabric. there are usually two torx screws to remove the bracket from sheetmetal (may be the torx from car tool kit), there is a clear plastic tube on bottom of unit - this is the conduit for water from antenna to go out of the car - check it out - you are trying to get to the nut on the round side of the antenna (it's either 1/4 inch or 8mm - forget) - BE VERY CAREFUL REMOVING THIS NUT - parts may fly! remove and open (carefully) by pulling the cover off - this exposes the gears that pull the toothed plastic leader in and out to lower/raise the antenna. you will most likely see one or more pieces of the old antenna wrapped around the center - pull then out - put cover back on, mind the placement of the washers - replace nut, put unit back in fender well and thread top out hole in fender, replace torx screws on bracket, make sure you 1) still have the drain line down and out the hole in bottom, and 2) antenna lead from radio is still plugged into the leader from antenna (black with silver tip plugs into female connector on short leader from antenna).
leave the fabric open for now. put rubber gromet on antenna, but not the nut. your replacement mast should have a silver tube, about the size of barrel of a pen but without a taper. there is a lip on one end. before fitting antenna, see if you can slip the nonlip end of the sliver tube into the antenna tube from outside. if you *can't* chances are the *old* silver tube is still in the antenna. check with small needle nose pliers, remove it. recheck with new silver tube. this is very important it 1) needs to be removed to install the new antenna, and 2) needs to be installed after the new antenna to keep it from pushing the antenna all the way out. which is pretty funny when you forget and do it... looks like an ED commercial. sometimes it's cruded up and difficult to remove. remember it's silver, but the antenna tube is brass colored, so look for the silver.
you need a helper to make this faster. only job is to turn the radio on or off upon command. no grease involved!
take the antenna and go back to the inside and look at the round takeup portion of the antenna (where you removed the old leader). note which way it is oriented, you will need to feed the new mast into the fender hole turned such that the notched side of the leader is pointed to the center of the spool (this makes sense when you see it). this helps prevent extra fishing for a bite...
have your assistant turn radio on, you should hear the antenna motor trying to extend the antenna (which is not yet installed). wait until the noise stops. (if the radio code is needed the antenna will *not* attempt to extend... do the code...) feed the plastic leader into the antenna from the outside - orient the plastic toothed side as discussed (turn towards the nut on the take up hub. have assistant turn radio off, twist and feed mast until it gets pulled down the hole, you may have to repeat a couple of times to get it to take. sometimes you need to carefully bend the last 1/2 inch of the leader straight to get it started.
when it takes some in.... leave radio OFF even if only 1/2 or so goes in.
you are ready for step two. take the silver tube earlier discussed and slide over the tip of the antenna and all the way down into the shaft in the fender (where you did the test fit earlier). then follow with the metal SAAB portion (if you have one) and lastly with the nut. hand tighten nut for now.
then have assistant turn radio on, antenna should extend completley, then radio off, it should retract more than last time. sometimes necessary to cycle a couple of times. eventually it should retract completley. snug the nut with cresent wrench. cycle again to test.
test the radio!
put the fabric in the fender wheel back and put that $250 in yourpocket!
