Mac, didja do any looking under hood once at side of road and shut off? Was there oil in the engine? If not, any sign where it went?
My guess might be, he changed the oil and filter after the head gasket job but left filter loose, and oil leaked out as you drove.
Or the original filter's gasket stayed stuck on the block and he tightened the new filter down against it. After a while, that unsupported gasket pops out sideways and oil gushes out, to bad effect.
Third scenario, he failed to tighten the drain plug.
Fourth, he did everything right except didn't put enough oil back in the engine - - say a quart or two, and then blanked.
That about wraps up the possibilities, in this conspiracy theorist's mind. All, you'll note, put the blame squarely on him where it seems to belong.
Course no way to know now, if he doesn't fess up. You could politely try asking him, "How could it totally lose oil pressure on me? Where did the oil go? It seems as if there was something undone by you people that let that happen." And see if his conscience doesn't kick in.
You drove in a running, non-rapping car, and after your mechanic's work, drove out a running, non-rapping car. That would seem to me to weaken Jonathan S's theory about possible pre-existing bearing damage.
Then a few miles later at speed suddenly the car lost all oil pressure. It loses oil pressure because it's not pumping oil, usually because there's no oil there to pump. Where was it, and why wasn't it there, are the big questions to me.
You should be driving your car, not facing another big repair bill.
It's kinda sad because sometimes when that light comes on and you get revs down and get right over to the side and shut down, even with an empty block no damage is done - - happened to me twice (NOT my fault either time - - once after a service station oil change, another time a rental truck's drain plug vibrated out.) But even a quick shutdown doesn't assure that, and sometimes a quick shutdown is impossible. In no way is it your fault that the engine is now rapping.
I'd suggest a little legal advice, or call Click and Clack and see if they don't agree.
One final possibility: Maybe it really is NOT rapping rods and is in fact empty lifters.
