so, have you tried to run the car without the battery? Get it started and pull the negative terminal on the battery. It should still run. We had a loose wire on the alternator and had to get a jump to get started on the midpoint of a roundtrip. Car ran with less and less power, but got home. discovered the hot wire from the alternator to the starter was loose at the alternator end. tightened it down, put a 45 minute charge on it, and the rest is, as they say, history! Also, this started when the starter went nuts and made all of the lights on the dash come on. Went through and replace the starter, belts, vacuum hoses, did the tune-up thing. and thought I was good to go! found out I had negelected one nut when doing the tighten tour...
