There is nothing risky about it at all. The idea is to see if the alternator is really putting out the electrons. if you disconnect the battery and the car stops it's not. if the car keeps running it is, at least to some extent. it's a shade tree mechanic quick test.
I didn't say to drive around with the battery disconnected. Although *anyone* that has gotten a jump start is basically doing that.
