So I'm late to this party and looks like everyone has taken care of you. Basically all engines have some pressureization of the crankcase (C) and to aid in emissions control rather than allowing the air that has mixed with possible combustibles (Oil Gas and the like) a positive (P) way of ventilating (V) the crankcase fumes back into the combustion side of the engine is to take the gases/fumes from the valve cover and back into the throbble body. some years did not have a PCV valve, other did, most of turbo cars did to control the directions of the the pressurization and keep it from mucking about with the oil seals in the turbo.
The valve is a one way passage item. and easy to test is to remove it from the car, take a *clean* piece of vac line and apply, blow, note if it passes air or not, then move the hose to the other end and repeat. if it is functioning properly it will pass on only direction. if it passes in both, or neither, (and either of these are typical failures) then it needs to be replaces. It's not a big deal. take the part to the parts counter at your local autoparts store. they will be able to find a suitable replacment. Many of them are plastic so carb cleaner or brake cleaner will often destroy the plastic and make it unusable. I's suggest getting a new one, clean the old one an put on the shelf as a spare for either testing or usage as needed in the future.
