The guage is subject to a lot of variables. They were unreliable and inacurate when they were new. The important part is knowing the actual coolant temperature and relating that to your car as it is configured. Open the cap and stick a thermometer in the coolant for a rough reading or find a good point and shoot infrared thermometer and point it at the thermostat housing to determine the actual temperature. Then you can more acurately guage your guage.
