When do the fans kicks on? Or, when does the temp gauge rise above 1/2?
With the AC on, the AC fan will cycle on when the AC cycles on. So don't get hung up by that.
With the AC off, I would expect that the fans don't come on when on the highway.
With the AC off, I would expect that the fans come on when the car isn't moving fast. The cooling fans don't come on when the engine gets hot. The cooling fans come on when the Radiator gets hot. The purpose of the cooling fans is to replace the airflow you would normally get when moving along at speed.
So when you're driving along, say above 30 mph, you've got airflow over the radiator to pull away heat. Slow down, and say come to a stop at a light, now there is not radiator airflow. Even the world's best radiator gets hotter. The thermoswitch in the radiator sees this, and kicks on the fans.
Remember, the temperature gauge is reading the temp in the engine. So there is usually some lag between that and the fans.
So if the fans are kicking on when you are moving slowly or not at all, that's normal. And the fact that the needle only moves a little above 1/2 is pretty darn good. Most folks complain about the needle getting perilously close to red before the fans kick in.
