I just had this job done after driving with the belt removed for almost four years. It cost me about 660.00 total after tax to: replace the rack (about 3 hours labour) and both tie rods, replace the middle connector exhaust pipe and fix/weld the hinges on my hood. I supplied the rack which I had removed from my 84 before sending it off to the junk heap . Driving with a leak and/or removing the belt are ok options. I removed the belt after the leak became so large that it could not be ignored and there was some disconcerting roughness in the steering (morning sickness). The decision to replace the rack was based on the amount of steering play that was developing in the last few months or so. The play was at the rack and not in the u-joint. I found pulling the rack from the 84 about six years to be one of the messiest jobs possible and could not imagine doing an R and R on my back in the dead of winter. The 86 a base model when I bought it used for 1200.00 has the four power window/mirror doors, water pump, rack, parts of the CIS, head, alloys, rad, rear seat, locks, radio and various miscellaneous items from the 84 - an S model. The odd color combination silver grey body/blue doors does turn heads. The car continues to run great.
