The bi-halogen lights are the same Hella Modular series that I'm talking about - check out the link I posted in my second post. PUMA is the only US source I've found for them, but I'm sure other shops specializing in rally gear have or can get them. PUMA generally has good prices, so I don't think extra shopping is necessary.
I hadn't considered polishing the stock glass - that seems like an excellent way to go. Most of my concern is ditching the reflectors - those parts go bad, and there is no easy way to refurb them. Applying some clear poly film (like StonGuard) to the glass lenses should keep them very safe.
So, it seems, the next step is just gutting the plastic housing and mounting some Hella modular lights to them. Rather than a single bi-Halogen light, I was thinking about using one of the 90mm high beams and 50mm low beams. That would allow you to choose, for example, a conventional low beam and a Xenon high beam if you wanted. Alternatively, a 90mm bi-level light and a 50mm fog might make some sense... Although, to keep things simple, a single 90mm in the middle would require virtually no fabrication.
I'm gonna see if I could source some shot H4 housings and make this work. I'm sure I can find somewhere to reliably and quickly polish the glass... I don't want to do it with a Dremel. :)
