Things are a LOT better than they used be when it comes to this stuff. The old varieties would yellow or brown pretty quickly. The new stuff really doesn't. I've been using some 3M material on my XR4Ti for about a year now and it's absolutely crystal clear. I more or less had to apply it as the XR4Ti (like most Fords in the US) has plastic headlights that get abraded by road debris and turn to junk quickly. That 3M film has been a champ - totally clear, no peeling or other issues. My 3w LED parking lights are actually bright enough to drive around the city with, despite having no reflector and 22 year old plastic in front of them. The film also comes off fairly easily using the 3M solvent designed to do it. I had no problems with my test piece.
Really, check into it again... I think it's absolutely worthwhile. Even if it means losing some light output... Saab/Hella aren't making more of those glass lenses - what we've got is all there will ever be. They need to be preserved unless you plan on fabbing up some fiberglass modular light mounts. :)
