the way halls work is something like this.

it works

it dont work ever again

no in-between a hall cant slowly die wont give any indication of dieing
it may last 50 years to 1 min. no one ever knows halls are a mystery in them self. if your experiencing problems as in your statement of the sensor dying it dont work like that its either living or dead.
if you have a ongoing problem list every issue and everyone here can collaborate and most of the time pin the prob.
as used distributors go it is a prob.
no one ever knows if a used hall in a used diss. will work or not.
its a gamble, personally i own 5 diss for 1 car, every diss 1985-93 will work on any motor even though the plug connector is different in the 87 to 88 distributeurs if one grabs the harness on the motor side and wire it into the running motors wires any diss will work.
im currently running a 93 distributor on a 88 had to rewire it up but it runs flawless.
30 to 60 buxs is a good price for a used distributor.
now if you buy one at a pick and pull put it in your car and the car wont start most pick n pulls will give you your money back if your back in the same day some say you get what you buy.
online auctions offer the ship to your door, but this is a gamble also
if you buy 1 used distributor 35% chance the hall is shot.
you will know immediately because the car will never start, the motor wont even stumble, if you buy 2 10% both are shot if you buy 3 .... well

there was something else i was going to mention,.. but i forgot....
....
....
....
....
.... wounder what it was
....
.... oh well
