You can test your distributor out of vehicle by connecting a voltmeter to the plus- minus. Slowly turning the distributor cam will produce a small voltage spike of abou 1.25 - 2. volts - this is what is sent to the igniter.
Personally I don't think a rebuild is difficult - but you have to watch for the small locating pin and c clips - and use a needle nose plier to slooooowly move the shutter up the drive so it doesn't bend. Various websites show to do it. In fact you can pretty well disassemble the whole thing, clean and lube.
However price differentials may not justify a rebuild eg you'll save a 50 dollars or so.
Have you checked your vacuum advance by sucking on the can - this might be an issue.
